47 Reasons to See 47 Ronin

Just got back from seeing the movie. It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be but it was also better than I thought it was going to be. Even so, it wasn’t a great movie. On a scale of 1-10 I’d give it a 7. I was expecting it to be Keanu in a fantasy land reminiscent of Japan and some evil supernatural beings would invade forcing Keanu to join a group of rebels to liberate their land. I don’t know how I came to that conclusion from the previews, but that was my thinking. I didn’t realize it was based on a true story, or at least a true historical legend.

The 47 Ronin were said to have lived in the 18th century in Japan. Their lord is killed by a neighboring lord and against the shogun’s orders they decide to take their revenge two years later. The movie follows the basic outline but gets into the supernatural which added to the entertainment of the movie. The special effects were not so special that I was distracted from the movie itself nor were the action sequences too long (think Matrix 2 and 3).

I had planned to count the number of Ronin in the movie to see if there were really 47. Instead, I counted the number of times Keanu looked sad, I stopped at 47. So if you’re a Sad Keanu meme fan then I’d say that’s 47 great reasons to go see this movie!

On another note, the previews shown were for a number of movies dealing with the ancient world including Hercules and 300 part 2 (301?).

What do you think?
