Years ago, I recall “Lost” being an incredibly popular show with much speculation. Eventually an official book was published and I remember reading an article in the USA Today about the book. The book was to answer many questions about the show and the one thing they said was, “We know where the show is going and no, they are not all dead and in purgatory.” I still don’t understand the ending of Lost but I think the gist was that they were indeed in purgatory.
Earlier this year I began seeing articles online about how this season The Doctor’s name would be revealed! As I watched each episode, I was watching with both anticipation and dread. I was excited to hear the reveal and dreading the disappointment it might bring. As we reached the end of the season, the episode was titled, “The Name of the Doctor” so I was ready. Nothing. So that would mean the Christmas Special right? Well after watching the Christmas special, I was once again disappointed. The Doctor’s real name was not revealed. So I went searching for the articles I read that promised the revelation.
Apparently I was wrong. Steven Moffat only stated that we would learn some important secrets about the Doctor this year. The name of the season finale was shared. However, there was never an explicit statement stating that the name would indeed be revealed. Clever bugger! I must admit though, I am glad his name was not revealed. In my imagination, the Doctor’s name could not be something as simple as “Chrístõdavõreendiamondhærtmallõupdracœfiredelúnmiancuimhne de Lœngbærrow” or “Theta Sigma.” No those are human contrived names. The Doctor is a Timelord, a species considerably more advanced than ours. I’m not sure what type of name I’d expect. Whale song? No. A bright light instead of sound or words? Maybe. Something beyond my imagination would be the only thing that would appease me.
So I look forward to Peter Capaldi taking on the role of the 12th Doctor and I am curious to see where Matt Smith will end up next.
